Choosing software
What should an Irish trade owner test during a software trial?
A useful software trial follows one piece of work from enquiry to invoice, then checks whether the owner, office and crew can each do their part.
The short answer
A useful software trial follows one piece of work from enquiry to invoice, then checks whether the owner, office and crew can each do their part.
A useful software trial follows one piece of work from enquiry to invoice, then checks whether the owner, office and crew can each do their part. Reading the feature list is only the first step. Keep a written record of what worked, what needed help and what remains unverified.

A seven-task trial scorecard
| Task | Evidence to keep | Pass question |
|---|---|---|
| Add a customer and site | Sample record | Are the payer and work address clear? |
| Record an enquiry | Owner and next action | Can the office follow up without asking you? |
| Prepare a quote | Scope, price and version | Can you retrieve the agreed version? |
| Schedule work | Crew and date | Does the right person see the instructions? |
| Complete a job | Notes, hours and evidence | Can another person understand what happened? |
| Prepare an invoice | Job reference and balance | Does it reflect agreed work and payments? |
| Export the sample | Readable output | Can you identify what would be retained on leaving? |
Mark each task as demonstrated, partly demonstrated or not tested. A partly demonstrated export is not a pass simply because a download button exists.
Use realistic, non-sensitive data
An illustrative clearance followed by maintenance will expose different requirements from a single appointment. Include a changed date, an agreed extra and a part payment. Those exceptions often reveal more than a perfect demonstration.
Use synthetic names and contact details while learning. If you introduce real customer information, follow your business’s data-protection process. Invite an office user and a crew user so you are not judging every screen through the owner’s account.
Write down the practical limits
Ask about provisioning, optional setup, imports, supported offline actions and who resolves a problem. In JobDiary, the trial request is followed by provisioning; do not plan an immediate live cutover before access is available. The optional setup service has a separate scope and charge, shown on the current pricing page.
At the end, choose on demonstrated fit. Do not treat an untested integration, automatic route optimiser or legal-compliance feature as present because the product handles other parts of the job. A short list of unanswered questions is useful evidence for a buying decision.
Connect this to the next step
